Robert J. Handy/WSSR Foundation/Gene Forrester Memorial Scholarships

The Washington State School Retirees' Association (WSSRA) invites high school seniors to apply for the Robert J. Handy and WSSR Foundation scholarships.  These awards are given to students who plan to pursue a career in education.

Statewide sixteen (16) WSSR – Foundation Scholarships and sixteen (16) PEMCO/ Robert J. Handy Scholarships will be awarded to students whose degree would be in one of these areas: teacher, counselor, speech therapist, occupational therapist, social worker or school psychologist. For the WSSR-Foundation, one $3,000 award and one $1,000 award will be granted in each of the eight WSSRA regions.  For Handy, two $900 scholarships (redeemable for four years) will be awarded in each of the eight WSSRA regions by PEMCO.

In addition, two (2) Gene Forrester Memorial Scholarships at $2,000 each will be awarded to students with a GPA of 3.0 or higher and who will major in Agricultural Education at Washington State University. 

Also, in each of WSSRA's eight regions, local WSSRA units may award additional scholarships.

WSSRA collects and distributes applications to readers in our eight regions who will select the recipients.  Applicants will be notified by May 15, 2024, if they have been chosen. 

SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION

Neil D Prescott-Student Teaching / Internship Scholarship

The Washington State School Retirees' Association (WSSRA) invites prospective teachers and other educators in their final year of college preparation to apply for the Neil D. Prescott Scholarship. This one-time scholarship is awarded to students who will be student teaching or conducting an internship during the 2024-2025 academic year. Sixteen scholarships (eight $3,000 awards and eight $1,000 awards distributed across the eight WSSRA regions) will be awarded.

In addition, in each  of WSSRA's eight regions, local WSSRA units may award additional scholarships.

Applicants Must:

(1) Be presently enrolled in a college of education in Washington State pursuing a career in education, (2) be committed to securing employment in a school district in the state, and (3) will conduct student teaching or an internship during the 2024-25 academic year.

2024-25 student teachers are encouraged to apply.

In addition, those planning to complete an internship as a counselor, physical or occupational therapist, social worker, or school psychologist and who are not currently employed in K12 schools, may apply in 2024-25.

Exception: A currently employed paraprofessional who is enrolled in a teacher preparation program who plans to student teach in 2024-25 is eligible to apply.
