WSSRA Membership Committee Members, Unit Presidents, and Unit Membership Chairs—
On August 15 the WSSRA Executive Board voted to end the “$10 per new member, $100 per unit for 25 new members in a year” membership incentive program that has been in place since 2007-08. In its place, the Board voted to insert the membership incentive program that is described below. This change is in effect for the 2018-19 school year.
Executive Director, WSSRA
WSSRA Day-of-Event Membership Incentive Program (effective 8/15/2018)
$10 cash can be given on-the-spot to eligible retirees or actives who attend a bona-fide WSSRA/local SRA recruitment activity with the payout handled in the following manner:
1. New members must sign-up the day of the event through issuing a check, paying cash, or providing a Social Security number if employed in a district with WSSRA payroll deduction available, or already retired and agreeing that the $7 per month dues be deducted from his or her DRS retirement check.
2. Following the activity, the event organizer (or designee) must send the completed membership forms to Michele Hunter in one packet with a written request for reimbursement ($10 for each new enrollee who was given $10 in cash at the recruitment event).
3. Michele will then include the reimbursement on the monthly local unit deposit. In this case the event organizer (or designee) can, if appropriate, seek a personal reimbursement from the local unit. Alternatively, with permission of the local president, a WSSRA check can be sent directly to the member who organized or managed the event and paid the $10 rebates through personal funds.
4. A bona-fide recruitment activity is one set up by the local unit, WSSRA, the Department of Retirement Systems, the Health Care Authority, or a local school district. WSSRA and/or the local unit must have made prior arrangements with the organizing school or agency for a recruitment table or booth. A visit by a local unit membership committee or leadership group to a faculty meeting or staff meeting for recruitment purposes would count—so long as membership forms were collected on the day of the event.
