January 2020 WSSRA Update

With COVID vaccines coming, the WSSRA Executive Board hopes that the 2021 Convention, scheduled June 6 – 10 at the Pasco Red Lion, will go on as planned.  However, the Board has reserved October 3 – 6 as alternative dates assuming that COVID worries still hover in late spring. Those worries are growing stronger as vaccine delays continue to dominate the news. A decision on the final date will be made once the vaccine picture becomes more clear. Tata Teitzel (tara@wssra.org) will be assisting with room reservations and convention registrations.

A virtual pre-retirement seminar is scheduled for February 18 from 5:00 to 7:30 pm.  A registration flyer is posted under this tab.  Speakers from DRS, HCA/PEBB, VEBA, Social Security and Medicare have been secured.

Membership is a particular focus this year with live retirement seminars and in person faculty meeting presentations not available to us.  One on one contact with non-members is helping, as is AMBA recruitment for supplementary insurance packages.

The 2021 legislative session begins on January 11 and is scheduled to end on April 25.  This odd-numbered year session is planned for 105 days—the so-called long session—with the top priority of passing a 2021-23 biennial budget that will go into effect on July 1.  With COVID the session will be unlike any other.  Virtual committee hearings, virtual voting and virtual constituent contact will be the order of the winter and early spring.

WSSRA legislative priorities and the political context for the session are outlined under the legislative tab on the website.  With a virtual legislature, all members are encouraged to reach out to local representatives and senators to share WSSRA priorities.  Virtual lawmaking will be a challenge, but it does provide unprecedented access to legislators.

Please keep apprised of legislative action by following Legislative Director Peter Diedrick’s weekly podcasts and frequent written updates under the “Legislative” tab.

Thanks for your ongoing support, and please maintain close contact with your local legislators as the session unfolds.
